TO WIN SAN DONATO - Cividale del Friuli
Yesterday we went to Cividale, the Palio di San Donato and, as usual, we were catapulted into a medieval setting with dance, music and costumes.
All the old town was closed to traffic to enter and you had to have a kind of "passport" giving permission to run smoothly for the city.
splendid setting for a historical re-enactment of such large proportions, Cividale revived so exciting this ancient tradition that is repeated with great success with the public since 2000.
The Palio di San Donato was in a comparison of archers, crossbowmen and later musketeers, representing villages and citizens of other cities or castles.
These tests were added to those of the race on foot or on horseback, in a setting of lavish entertainment, with great numbers of nobles and commoners. The competition saw the contenders of varying provenance, as well as a massive presence of Udine, representatives also came from Treviso, Venice and Muggia. The race of 1548 enrolled 79 participants. Horse racing took place, preferably on a route that wound from the bell tower of the cathedral up to the stone, called the race, beyond the village of Gagliano, stone still exists. The prizes for the winners consisted of rich fabrics, and also for the value of these, the prize was a coveted trophy.
order were appropriate to the importance and prestige of the city, not looked after at the expense, if necessary, bought in Venice. In 1484 the prize of the City, to be exposed crossbow was of cloth, and could also consist of crimson damask, damask yellow or another, but always of the highest quality. The final winners will receive the proverbial pig, or a hawk or a rooster.
The only thing ... I thought of going with Luna and every step we were stopped by people who wanted to touch her, caress her, and even photograph it ... in short, was the star of the afternoon.
